What do you mean by "open"? Do you mean to view the contents of the CD or to actually play it? It is good if you describe what you are trying to do in more detail. Does audio works with other programs? What are the relevant specifications of your system? (sound card, distribution).

Just a side note: Redhat is old and unsupported as well. Redhat 9.0 dates all the way back to the beginning of 2003 and even back then, it was not very good.

You can only play/rip/burn audio CD's, you can, however, "open" data CD's.

I want to see the contents of the cd. I am not sure of wat a kind of file it has (wma or wav).My admin says it does not mount.

An audio CD is not mountable because it does not have a valid filesystem. So it can not be viewed similar to windows. There are "fake" filesystems that allow one to read audio cds i.e. cdfs and cddafs but not sure of their current status or if they work with a 2.6 kernel.

Try this with the CD in your CDRom. If the cdrom is /dev/hdc, otherwise you need to change the dev=/dev/hdc to match your cdrom.
Code:

cdda2wav -L 0 dev=/dev/hdc
cdrom device (/dev/hdc) is not of type generic SCSI. Setting interface to cooked_ioctl.
126976 bytes buffer memory requested, 4 buffers, 8 sectors
#Cdda2wav version 2.01_linux_2.4.26_i686_i686, real time sched., soundcard, libparanoia support
