open Pdf's and Suse 9.1

I would like to ask a urgent question I have:


How can I open pdf files in Linux? I am using my university's turing machine online and I tried xpdf, acroread, and the short (was it 'gv') command followed by the file's name, but no success. How do I promt turing to tell me what it has installed for reading pdf's?

I'm not sure what type of system you are using. However, as this is a university machine, one thing you could do is message/email/call on the telephone your help desk or admin.

If you know the name of the file and where it is located on the university's sytem you could download it via ftp to your local computer and read it there.

other suggestions?
 

Unfortunately, I dont know how admins it. The only person I could ask is my teacher tomorrow, but I have reason not to want to do it.


Could you help me try the ftp option? I am not sure how to type the address.


Say I type the following from my directory to get to the directory where the file is:

cd ~teachersname/cs/hw/hw3


In IE, i try ftp://schoolTuringName.edu/~teachername/cs/hw/hw3

I also tried it without the tilde, neither would work. Tells me it cannot find the directory.



Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Since you seem to know the location of the file and you are running Windows with IE you can install Adobe's acrobat reader, point IE at the file using http not ftp, and read it in your browser/save it to disk/print it out or whatever.

Beyond that I don't think I can help you much. Good luck finding and reading your homework.
