Oops! Broken X and KDE after upgrading

Greetings!

Now I'm hoping someone can help me here because I'm about to trash my install and start again! Now it's all my own fault for upgrading to the 2.6.6 kernel.

After doing this, my X failed to start and after some investigation have discovered that this is due to nvidia not supporting 4KSTACK's which are apparently enforced in my kernel now.

So, I thought I'd revert to the "nv" driver. Didn't work

Upgraded X to 4.4.0 and now I can get X to start, but it boots into the Redhat login screen in 640x480 then opens a failsafe X.

If I run startkde from here, it does start, but the fonts are all over the place and each component is in it's own X window.

So, I know there are a load of issues here, but the main issues are:

1. Does the "nv" driver in 2.6.6/X4.4.0 support my NVIDIA GForce 440 Go, even though the probe fails to find it?

2. Why does X constantly remove the XF86Config file on shutdown? Running xf86cfg does not help.

3. I have startkde in .Xclients and .xinitrc but KDE does not get started automatically.

My base install is RH9 Shrike, but I have been running kernel 2.6.0 and KDE 3.1.4 for a while very happily thanks....

Any help/pointers would be most appreciated!!!

Cheers

Chris
