One of the hard drives are damaged.

Hello everybody

When the computer starts, you will read a flashing message about S.M.A.R.T and a few other things.

I have two hard drives. There is a strange noise from the computer when I run it for more than 3 or 4 hours continuously.

I firmly believe one of the hard drives is not working properly. I saw a message about a problem in S.M.A.R.T.

It was a flashing message. I couldn't read it. I don't run any Windows on the computer. All are Linux. The default is Mandriva.

How do I read the flashing message you see at the start of a computer?
I want to find out the damage one replace it with a new one.
Your thoughts are welcome.

try http://sourceforge.net/projects/smartmontools/

You might also consider using GSmartControl too http://gsmartcontrol.berlios.de/home...en/Screenshots

Have you tried using the smartctl command to get information from the drive? Of course this will only work if the drive can still be seen from the system.

For example:

Code:
# smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.38 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen

There are tools on this live CD to diagnose HDDs, either generic SMART or more low level manufacturer utils:

I have downloaded the UBCD. I hope I would find time to burn it and try withing next 72 hours.
As a matter of fact, I got an old UBCD at home. I think it is some 6 or 7 years old.
