This makes me very angry. Basing that Microsoft is "cheaper" and "more reliable" than Linux. Just one more reason to hate ms.' They basically illude to the fact that if it runs on more PCs than Linux, it must be better. BAH

Well, I hate the approach they're trying to take against open source software.

I don't see how software that is freely obtainable and deployed could be less coss effective than paying and arm and a leg for MS products.

Well, to be fair, Linux admins ARE generally more expensive than Windows ones. It's not ALL lies.

They tend to ignore the costs of the downtime, virus software, crashes, etc that are part of a Windows install, but what else do you expect? :)

linux admins are also much cooler people ;)

I have a dream to make an excellent 3D RPG game under Linux... so far it's only a dream, I still don't learn cpp...

MS has no place on a pc.

Its unfortunate, but a lot of people read this stuff and buy it...Microsoft is not the best software company out there, but they will really do almost anything to get your business...thats what good sales and marketing departments do (without being illegal of course).

I know some folks who are on the technology committee of local community college in central Florida. They decided that they needed to upgrade their backend hardware and software...so they asked for bids from Microsoft, Sun, IBM, etc, etc...it came down to Sun and Microsoft...hardware costs were a wash...while Sun's machines were more expensive, they needed fewer than the less expensive machines Microsoft wanted...software and support costs were a wash too...

It came down to one factor...Microsoft was going to pay for a full-time senior-level sysadmin for 3 years, Sun wasn't. Assuming a senior-level MS admin and Sun admin make about the same...lets say $80K/year...that was going to save the school $240K. Sure there are other things to consider like downtime for security holes, etc...but it was really hard for the committee to look past the $240K in savings especially with education budgets getting slashed nowadays.

If companies like Sun and IBM aren't willing to go to the mat for deals like these, no one is taking down Microsoft.

sadly, those companies cant outbid m$, they just don't have the money to provide a better deal.

m$ on the other hand will offer its software near free for certain organization, with the effect of locking people into that software. schools for example will teach m$ trash, and force students to use m$ software (just to write a essay, or do a power point thing at home)

Thats right. And I think that is the main factor in such MS claims as that. What they fail to mention is that half the IT department looses their jobs after a few months of running Linux... It just doesn't take as many people to maintain linux, generally speaking anyway... Thats exactally what happened at my old job. No more coming in every saturday night at 1am to bring the server down and run maintainance scripts. Once you get all the workstation users aclimated, your not busy with teaching the 'ropes' to people on new software... No more waiting on hold for an hour and a half with Microsoft because their latest security update just thrashed your server AND DB and all they have to say is "sorry, this has affect alot of customers and were working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible"... My ass. That was a screwed up day. Basically, we lost quite a few techs over the switch to linux because we just didn't need the man power anymore.

Thats just more MS FUD.... The sad part is, alot of people believe it.

and if it works fine ill try to share it to all linux community for free. if you
want to create a 3d game for linux try OpenGL or a 3d engine like lightwave,
ogre 3d wings, blender, panda 3d, etc

I agree... Microsoft servers are much easier to install and maintain. Hold on, read further ;)

But this is ONLY as long as everything works all right. Once you get a problem, you are NOWHERE. Binary configuration files, stupid undocumented registry. If you are out of luck, you might never discover what happened, and re-install everything.

Linux on the other hand always provide an escape. Everything is readable, tools are an order of magnitude better, and the OS is designed with a sysadmin in mind, not with sales figures in mind.

Yes, M$ lies. Microsoft servers LOOK better and easier, but that is before a problem occurs. And problems occur, sooner or later.

But with this lying, they still have a huge market share. The regular administrator who grew up with M$ doesn't know better and takes it all for granted.

So the reason to hate MS is that because of this market share, many companies believe that there is only one platform in the world for which they have to provide drivers or software. I am still suffering that some applications in my company do not have a Linux ported version, like our bookkeeping program. And neither does my bank provide the electronic banking program for Linux.

M$ has more or less a monopoly, and forces me to keep MS machines around by telling lies. That is not fair.

My storage drive was almost wiped out by a virus Macroshaft let in, and the password to one of my e-mail accounts was stolen. F**k Macroshaft! Linux may be giving me a little hell right now with it's steep learning curve, but I would much rather use it than Hackware.

The main goal of corporate advertising is to get people to talk about the product.
From the looks of this thread, and the many others like it, Microsoft has it figured out quite well.
Why care what they do? If you enjoy their products, use them. If not, don't. Typing the companies name over and over just generates more ads.
