older live CD for 8 year old apple notebook?

Hi all,

I'm trying to help out a college classmate who's computer finally went out. To example of Macintosh workmanship, it was just the hard drive that blew out. 8 years IS impressive. She does not have the money for a new hardrive, so I'm thinking Live CD. I was thinking about using Dam* Small Linux, however what I need is maybe a Dam* small yellow dog. If anyone has ever had experience recompiling a kernel for a live CD, what is the learning curve for that?

Is this the correct direction to go in? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Mohtech.
