Post Odd CD Light Behavior

This question is more out of curiosity/to learn more rather than any sort of concern:

I've got a laptop with Ubuntu 6.06 installed. I've noticed that the LED indicator for the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive continually flickers on and off. It flicks on about once a second or so, however not at full brightness- it is dimmer than normal. This continues even when there is no CD in the drive, when the CD drive is open, and even when I'm at the login screen.

When reading from a CD, the light operates normally, turning on and off at full brightness to indicate that the drive is work. HOWEVER, when the drive reading is not causing the indicator to be on in full, the dim flickers continue.

All of the other indicator LED's work normally.

I was just wondering if there was some sort of software that controls the indicator that I could look at or something like that, mainly out of curiosity.

To me this sounds like its probably a hardware problem.
