NVidia Instructions!

Hello people!
I run SuSE 9, and I had problems getting 3D graphics to work.

I figured it out, and made this small How-TO...
If your not running SuSE but a diffrent distro just follow the general instructions or ask for help here.

Can a mod make this a sticky please?
I would have liked it if there was a post like this when I got here. would have saved me a lot of time...

Enjoy people!

For all SuSE user's that have truble enabling 3D Graphics, or for those that havn't installd SuSE this is what you need to do:

1) Install (Or Re-Install if its already installed) SuSE.
2) When you get to the part where SuSE detects your internet settings, and you test them out by updating... get ALL the updates, but not the NVidia one! (Its the last one on the list)

From what I understand, SuSE doesn't have it on the CD's for legal reasons.
But you can get the NVidia driver by updating... DONT DO THAT!

3) Finish the install as usual. Do not mess with the hardware settings SuSE detected for your monitor and graphics card.

4) The very first thing you need to do after the install is install apt-rpm.
http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/ - Very easy instructions, even a newbie like me can do it.

After you install apt-rpm go to the terminal and write: apt-get update
It will get you a very large lists file of programs... it might take some time...

Note: you need to change the sources.list file. its in this dir': /etc/apt/sources.list
Instructions on this are on the site I gave the link too... just a small tip: you don't need the rpm-source line.. put a # before it. (you'll understand what the hell I'm talking about when you will see the site)

5) now that you have a new install of SuSE without the NVidia driver, and you have apt-get... go to the terminal and write: apt-get install synaptic

It might take some time... but its worth it.
After its done installing, restart and:

Click on the menu (buttom left, huge green button can't miss it ) and then run program...
From there choose synaptic from the list.

6) with the synaptic search (top-right) search for: "kernel-source" and install it.
Its a 45MB file but you need it...

7) go to: http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/dis...nstaller-HOWTO

And do the rest of the instructions.
Tip: when you boot just write: linux 3 to load without X.

8) go to Yast>>hardware>>monitor and graphics card>>3D Acceleration>> enable

your DONE!

It works great for me, only tux still gives me sound only.
But that's tuxracers code not my computer...

I hope I helped people by writing this... its the least I could do!
Enjoy!

yap, I wasn't as lucky...
and this how-to is for people that ran into problems...

small note: it only works for 16bits at the moment... so if you thought that you got something wrong because you couldn't enable 3D graphics for 24Bits don't worry about it...

No. Something like this should be more along the lines of an Answer, aka HowTo. You should submit it as that please.

But we already have one Answer for nvidia and also a sticky in Newbie for this type of topic: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=71711

So with that in place, we don't need to two stickies on this subject.

Regards.

PS. If you feel you want something stickied, please submit it by email, don't beg in the forums. Thanks.

I wasn't begging!

All I wanted was to do something nice...

I had truble getting 3D graphics to work, so I thought I'd save some time for people that experience the same problems...

nevermind...
