nvidia gentoo freezes

Hi, I just installed the latest nvidia-glx and kernel-nvidia stuff for gentoo. I hit startx and then bring up "glxinfo | grep direct" and I see that 3d rendering is enabled. So everything looks good. However, as soon as I start glxgears/quake3/or just start another program that requires a window. It locks up. Help?

kernel-2.6.12-r6

Oddly enough, I'm having lockups on the same kernel version. I'm wondering if there are DRI issues with it. Try an older kernel, if you don't need the new stuff. I think 2.6.9 is still in portage. Or a vanilla 2.6.11.

Yeah, my card is an ATI, but I don't do TOO much 3d-intensive work, so I'm not sure how important having an NVidia vs ATI card would be to me.

kernel-2.6.9-gentoo-r9 still fails

I tried using an older kernel but the same thing happens. Running glxgears or anything that requires a GUI and the computer locks up I can move the mouse and use the keyboard for about 2 seconds before those lock up and I cannot change screens.

What happens if you press "Num Lock" or similar? Keyboard lights change?

I have had glxgears lock up once, but I figured it is because I have composite enabled. Otherwise, all of my 3-D stuff works. I am using the unmasked nvidia drivers on kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r7.

Also, make sure you follow the nvidia install documentation.
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

Also, remember, if you are using an Nvidia card, disable the dri in xorg.conf. It is all in the documentation.

I have it fixed

If anyone had the same problem as me then add this section into your xorg.conf
# VideoRam 26459
Option "NvAGP" "2"

Just add that Option line in your exorg config.

A value of 0 means noagp, value of 1 means nvidias agp, and a value of 2 is for a different agp. I put 2 in and now no problems.

Hope this helps someone.
