I've been using Ubuntu for some time now. Everything was great about Ubuntu until I decided to follow a course on GPGPU programming.
I have a Nvidia GeForce GT 525M graphics card on my Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop and the trouble began when I tried to install the latest Nvidia driver for my graphics card. I could install it and it was working but the dash disappeared and the resolution got reduced.
I tried my best to solve this issue for no avail. Then I decided to try CentOS. The Nvidia driver just gave me a black screen this time.
Since both the distros failed, does that mean that Nvidia driver is not compatible with my hardware ? Or can you suggest anything else I can try ?
If everything fails, I'll have to go back to Windows and try configuring MinGW since the Nvidia driver works great in Windows.
How did you install the Nvidia driver on Ubuntu? I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti and one of the first things I do when I install/reinstall my ubuntu/mint/debian operating system is install the latest graphics driver through the terminal. I've had issues in the past but none that weren't anything other than my lack of experience at the time.
Distribution: Debian Sid AMD64, Raspbian Wheezy, various VMs

If you're using the .RUN installer from NVIDIA are you then running nvidia-config and then using the nvidia-setings tool once on your desktop (this sometimes has to be run as root in order to change xorg.conf)?
Other than that I, too, ahve found the binary drivers surprisingly easy to install.
