nvidia driver problem

I downloaded the nvidia drivers from the nvidia web site, and installed it, and I altered the xorg.conf file appropriately. When I did a "startx", I didn't see an NVIDIA logo. Does that mean that the install wasn't successful? How can I tell if the installation was successful and the drivers are working properly.

I did get one message while installing the drivers:

Code:
The rivafb driver conflicts with the NVIDIA driver; the
NVIDIA kernel module will still be built and installed,
but be aware that the NVIDIA driver will not be able to
function properly if the rivafb module is loaded!
Is this going to be a problem for me? How do I know if I'm using the rivafm module, and how do I get rid of it (if necessary)?

do an "lsmod" to see the modules you have loaded... see if "rivafb" or something like that is listed...

if you do find it listed, do a "modprobe -r rivafb" to remove the module, and then try starting X again...

One way to tell if your installation was successful is to run the program 'glxgears' before and after you install the new drivers, which is sort of tricky if you don't feel like uninstalling them, running the program, installing the drivers again, and running the program.
Anyway, there should be a huge difference in terms of frames/second, which will be displayed on the console/standard output by the program.

I got it working. I put the following line in the image section of my lilo.conf file:

Code:
append = "video = rivafb: off"
But, actually, I'm not sure how necessary this was. The nvidia logo shows for like half a second and maybe I blinked and missed it before.

One way to check if you've got the right nvidia driver installed is to run:

Code:
nvidia-settings
It will show the driver version.
