Number of speakers to use for kernel sound?

I have a C-Media sound card (Hercules Muse XL) and everything is working great, but I am unsure if I selected the correct number speakers I have. I have a 4.1 setup, so I not sure if I should tell the kernel I have 4 or 5 speakers. Which do I use? Does the kernel assume the .1 if I tell it 4 speakers? Also, does the kernel drivers give me surround sound support or do I need to install and configure ALSA for that?
