Nuked HDD - Can I get the files back?

I run ubuntu (Debian Based linux distro), and I nuked my file system twice with the mkfs command. I am hoping that I can get the files back off my hdd. I have not written anything to this HDD since then as it is a spare HDD.

Is there anyway to undo the mkfs or have I just lost all my data?

I am still a newbie to linux.

Thanks in Advance.

You might be able to recover the data. Maybe. Check out this information:

Hope it helps somewhat.

You maybe able to use symantec ghost 8.0 and make an image of the drive, then use ghost explorer that comes with ghost to open up and read the image. I had a problem with a usb flash drive that had a corrupted mbr and kept coming up with i/o errors and would not read or even recognise the dirve as being there, but ghost was able to make an image of it and then I could retrieve just about all the files that I needed under ghost explorer. I think You can download a trial version of ghost from the symantec site.
