NTPd woes
 

Can someone give me a comprehensive source for information regarding ntp? Google doesn't really turn up much that is useful to me.

I am having major difficulty getting a bunch of RHEL3 systems to sync with my windows domain controller, they even won't sync with the NIS server if I set them to sync with that. I can only think that it is something I'm not configuring right. Ideally, I want all of the systems on the inside to sync with the windows domain controller as it syncs automatically with external sources. Can anyone suggest how I might easily do this with ntp?

Alternatively, I thought about setting up a cron that just uses ntpdate every hour or so to keep systems synced but I really don't like that idea. I've read a bunch of stuff through but I'm still not able to make sense of why the ntp clients are so stubborn to refuse to sync with the DC.

What NTP client are you using? I recommend OpenNTPD, it's lightweight and can be configured as server as well. Never had any problems with it, configuration cannot be simpler. Just one line in ntpd.conf "server x.x.x.x" and that's it.

Ok I'll try that then. I don't know what version of ntp they are using here, it was being used way before I got here to keep time with an old solaris nis server that is now defunct. It seems to not like anything else apparently. I'll give openntp a shot.
