NTFS vs Ext3 for Dual Boot Shared Drive
Hi,
I am planning on installing Umbuntu in a dual boot setup with Windows XP x64, my plan is to play games on x64 and do everything else in Umbuntu. As a part of this setup i want to have one shared drive that contains file used by both systems. My question is, which file system should i use for the shared drive? Really i am looking for the option that will give the best performance from both operating systems. The drive is SATA. On another note, anyone know how Umbuntu will handle a AMD X2 4800+ (any dual core issues)? Regards LostProphet |
The drive should probably be FAT32 because linux can only read NTFS (write support is experimental) and XP can't read ext3 (without a third party module, and I'm not sure how well it works). Better to use the tried and true solution: FAT32...
On the athlon, here's a link which looks like they were running Gentoo with a 2.6.12 kernel: http://www.linuxhardware.org/article...46&mode=thread Not sure if you need to download one of the special kernels from the Ubuntu repositories. I think the 64 bit kernels end in SMP or something like that... Here's a generic package kernel-image-2.6.11-9-amd64-generic from the universe repositories. You should just be able to sudo apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.11-9-amd64-generic after updating your /etc/sources.list |
wow, thankyou for the amazingly fast responce.
I have always used NTFS as i got the impression this was faster for windows, although i could be completly misguided. For a drive that is used just for storgage do you think FAT32 will have be any slower? I use alot of software that is pretty disk intensive. |
You'll probably experience some performance hit. But you can keep your Windows partition as NTFS and just the shared drive as FAT32. That's the only way I know to share files between linux and windows, unless you're willing to hose up an NTFS partition with the linux NTFS write support...

FAT32 is really the only choice if you want both OSes to be able to read and write. (There are add-ons to Windows to let you access EXT files, but I don' like adding parts.) |
