Question ...not cleanly unmounted error?

I recently began having a problem with my Suse 7.1, after Lilo gives the opening screen and I select any of the Linux options, the familiar screen of white text on black background srolls by, including a line which reads '(something)....not cleanly unmounted....' or words to that effect, and when the log-in screen is supposed to pop up, all I see is a screen of rainbow colored static. Nothing moves, and I have to reboot to get out of this screen.
I'm running this installation on a Celeron 900 system, with 258 MB ram, and a 64 MB Nvidia graphics card. I don't remember failing to log out properly when shutting down, so don't know what wasn't unmounted properly. Any ideas?

Ron
