No users on login screen / permission error

Hello,

The problem I encounter is that the users on the login screen have disappeared, making it impossible for me to log in. Trying to acces via another tty I was also unable to log in. That is, immediately after having accepted my password the following error message appeared:

--francesco /home/francesco: change directory failed: permission denied

As root I can login and I have verified and tried several things upon which:
1) Checked the permissions on directories /home and /home/francesco, they were correct (drwxr-xr-x).
2) Checked the file /etc/password for usernames and home directories. They were correctly listed.
3) I created a new account and tried to login, but unfortunately, the same errors come up.

Does anyone have an idea or a suggestion to make? Thanks.
My machine runs with Mandriva 2011 (upgraded from 2010.2), kernel 2.6.39.4-5.1, kde4

Francesco

While root, try issue this from the shell:

Code:
chown -R francesco:users /home/francesco
then try login again as that user.

Thanks for your suggestion, but it did not work.

I have no idea what caused the problem and no other solution, so I did a fresh install of Mandriva 2011.

The only thing that comes to mind is a problem with Selinux, because after the fresh install of Mandriva 2011, I now have a selinux folder in root directory. This was missing in my former installation, an upgrade from Mandriva 2010.2 to Mandriva 2011 using urpmi.
