No sound sample

When I /sbin/sndconfig in RH 7.2, PCI probe results state 'A PCI sound card was found in your system. The details are: Model:VIA Technologies|AC97 Audio Controller'. When I move on to Sound Card Test it says 'A sound sample will now be played to determine if your sound card has been correctly configured'. The result-no sound. In the BIOS I have enabled the Onboard Legacy Audio and disabled the Sound Blaster Mode. The motherboard user's manual says 'select SB I/O base address', 'select SB IRQ', 'select SB DMA', 'enable/disable MPU-401', and 'select MPU-401 I/O address' if Onboard Legacy Audio is chosen. I suspect the setting of these parameters may have something to do with the sound card configuration. Also, in 'KDE Control Center-Information-Sound results in 'Sorry, no information available on sound card'. And in KDE Control Center-Sound-Sound Service I click 'Test Sound" and no sound. I hope this is sufficient info to reach a diagnosis and solution. Thanks, Larry

Have you tried to switch to Sound Blaster mode on your motherboard BIOS?

I enabled Sound Blaster mode (did not disable onboard legacy audio mode) and ran /sbin/sndconfig. Same results as before-found AC97 card but no sound. Motherboard vendor says sound blaster is integral with the onboard audio, not a separate PCI card. Also, when I enable Sound Blaster mode I can't get online, the modem doesn't respond. Even though I selected the same irq10 for sound blaster mode as the irq for onboard audio it appears that sound blaster mode is automatically selecting irq5 where my modem is????
