No sound mixer found

After installing, the little sound icon in the tray has a red x through it. It says no mixers were found. I'm running Suse 9.3 and the sound card is "Dell 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Controller." I think the sound card is configured (but there's no sound so I'm not sure), how can I set up a mixer in KDE?

you must have the mute on!
kmix comes with kde, and will probably need turning on, make sure all the lights are green and volumes turned up,
