No sound in various applications

Hi,

I have recently totally reinstalled my entier Gentoo system from scratch.. But I'm having big problems with sound. Some programs like the ut2004 demo and XMMS run sound fine. However, I get absolutely no sound or error messages in Grip and neverwinter nights. In Enemy Territory, I get this error:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp

which I managed to fix by adding 'et.x86 0 0 direct' to /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss, but I never had to do this before.. In my last install with the same kernel, distro and PC, I didn't have to do anything, sound just worked in all of these programs. IS there anything I can do to fix this? Could I have missed out something while installing? I'm using ALSA and the volume controls are fine.

Thanks

OK, so I upgraded to kernel 2.6.2 (from .1) and compiled it with ALSA as modules instead of built in.. It still didn't work. However, I removed the miles .dll's from the nwn folder (which I put there trying to get the toolset working in wine) and it works now! sound in ET also works right away, but sound in grip doesn't work.. Oh well, I didn't really want it anyway.
