no sound for cd players

I currently run Suse 8.0, and here's my issue: my cd's will play, but w/out sound. I have tried using koncd, kscd, gtcd, tcd, cd player & xsadp. <<I don't yet know how to make xmms play from either /dev/cdrecorder or /dev/cdrom.>> Is it maybe an issue with onboard sound? Should I move the audio jumpers from pins 1/2 to 2/3? <-- I read that at another site, but don't know enough to try that yet. Sound works for everything else. The volume in my mixer is up, no mute button is activated anywhere (so far as i know). TIA for the help. :-D

well xmms comes with the cd audio plugin, with which you can play your cd,just add the cdrom directory(usually /mnt/cdrom) into the playlist and that would be enough.
You could try command line cdplaying utilities like cdplay and cdp and check whether they generate any error messages if there is no sound.

Actually you add the /dev/cdrom directory to your playlist (not mnt) since you can't mount an audio cd. I've noticed that the cd playing apps don't play cds in most cases when using the stock drivers that come with the kernel (xmms doesn't exhibit this problem). To get all the other cd players to play your cds then you'll probably have to install the alsa drivers.
