No protocol specified Can't open display: :0.0

Just got Ubuntu 8.04.2 up and running and I'm having an intermittent problem where X applications run locally can't open the display. The problem comes and goes and I haven't been able to correlate it to anything I'm doing. Also, if I ssh back into my host and send the X traffic over the secure channel, it seems to always work. Since the problem is intermittent, it makes me think it's a bug, but I haven't found any information on this in my searches. Logging out and back in always fixes the problem until it occurs again. Furthermore, the problem will resolve on its own many times.

$ xterm
No protocol specified
/usr/bin/xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :0.0

Any ideas?

Brandon

Are you always trying to run these xterms (or X applications) as the same user? Or does it vary?
If it varies, see if there is a difference whether you run xterm as root, vs xterm as a user.

Anything interesting happen?

I've had similar issues in the past, only it was on a KDE Debian installation. Because I'm human, I don't completely trust my mind and memory, so below are the notes I kept in case it were to happen again, maybe it might help.
Quote:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
FIX: apt-get install --reinstall kde-guidance
Reboot
Then reinstall NVIDIA drivers
