I just tried to build a new (2.4.4) kernel for my RedHat 7.1 system. Everything seems to working fine except for one small problem... My modem seems to have vanished. When I try to dial my isp (using kppp) its says that it can't open the modem. I tried changing the modem to every other location shown in kppp with no luck. I also noticed that everytime I try to dial with kppp the following line (or something very similar) is added to /var/log/messages:

modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-4

The modem works fine if I use the old 2.4.2 kernel (the default kernel for RedHat 7.1). Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried manually inserting the module for the ppp using insmod? Did you compile the new kernel with support of the module?

Problem solved

This was not a ppp problem. The problem was that I forgot to add serial support in the kernel (char-major-4 is another name for the serial support apparently)
