no errors, but no sound

i recently reinstalled slackware 8.1, compiled a custom kernel, and installed the alsa sound drivers, all with no errors. everything works perfectly, except there is no sound. lsmod indocates that all of the appropriate sound modules are properly loaded. when i configured my kernel, in the sound support section, the only thing i said yes to was sound support. i said no to everything else. did i omit somethin important? my sound card is an onboard intel810 chip. please help!!

Quick question: Have you tried it as root? It could be a permissions issue. Log in as root and attempt to play a sound. If it works, you'll probably need to add your normal account to the audio group, or just change permissions on the audio device. If that doesn't work, I'll see what I else I can help you figure out.

you must also enable the intel 810 driver.

if kernel 2.4 its module name is es_i8xx
if kernel 2.6 its module name is snd_i8x0 (if i'm not wrong)

set it as module or directly compiled into your kernel

You shouldn't be using sound as root anyway, it's too dangerous.

Not sure on that one, mate. Try adding root to the audio group? It honestly sounds like an intentionally secure setup, but interesting how it was done.
