No echo for user id when logging in

I am running Red Hat Linux release 7.1 (Seawolf)
Kernel 2.4.2-2 on an i686 at this time. When the user logged in one day all is well. The next day one character of the login did not echo on the screen. The next day 2 characters of the login did not echo back on the screen. The next day none of the characters in the login echo back on the screen. The odd thing is all systems are functioning as expected. This machine is quite isolated. Looking for any suggestions as to what to check.
