nivida GF 4: any body get tv-out working on a 2.6 kernel?
Hi. I was wondering if any body got there nvida card tv-outing (I just made that up ) while using the new 2.6 kernel. I can't seem to get it to work any more. Note: this is the first time i'm trying to get tv-out to work on THIS installation (but I was able to do so on previous ones), so I don't know if I didn't configure my XF86Config file right, or that something else is the matter. Here is the relevant section of that file:
I know the "Identifier" bit is wrong, but that shoulden't cause problems.
And there is another thing. When I uncomment the "option" lines above, I not only see nothing on the TV, but when I switch to an console with "ctrl alt Fx" the (computer) monitor is all messed up. That is I see blocks of strange colors (yellow, green, you get it), but nothing readable. It stays that way even if I logout of X. The system hasen't frozen because it still reacts to input. So I can type "reboot" to reboot, although I won't see "reboot" on the screen.
If any one knows what's going on, let me know. I searched google, but other then an howto of how to setup tv out with nvidia cards, I found nothing about problems with tv out and 2.6 kernels.
p.s. I of course patched the nvidia kernel module with the patch found at www.minion.de
I think I spot your problems, which are multiple, but, simple to make.. lets start with twin view..
Try adding "TwinViewOrientation" "Left Of" so that both modes are acceptable to the vid card.. netxt
Define WAY more metamodes.. you should have a line more like "640x480,640x480 800x600,800x600 1024x768,1024x768 800x600,640x480 640x480,800x600"
And continue that till you've got every possible variation on those 3 resolutions together. As for the yellow and green blocks, that's a side effect of the driver resetting the resolutions, and it sort of messes up console unless you have your console in vga normal non framebuffer default whatever mode so that it doesnt have anything to really mess up
Thanks! I added more meta modes and it did work.
Here is a mystery. I commented out all the tv-out options from my configuration file and I still have a mesed up console. I edited the configuration file before I went in to X. It turns out that when every I have the tv-out plug pluged in my video card at bootup, I will get an messed up console after I do "startx". It's not a big deal so don't bother to much. It is strange though.
Anyway, I corrected that little problem by deleting my XF86Config file, rebooting, console works fine on mine right up till it enters tv mode...
Then. I did a new vid config... fixed everything up without TV... startx... set default runlevel to 3 instead of 5...
Then I went and added in all my TV lines and commented them out. So before it gets around to starting the TV settings and screwing everything up, I can choose if I want tv mode or normal.. also...
well.. lemme look up a website.. you can use aliases with the startx command.. such as
startx -tvmode
startx -lcdmode...
with subsections corresponding to the names you give them.. so you dont ever have to comment anything out.
