Sorry can't help it, I just gotta post this, this is from the PC Magazine forums, in response to a column by John C. Dvorak (whom I love) on XP entropy.

The next time you get frustrated with Linux or you see a post here where they're threatening to "go back to windows", or you see the phrase "RPM hell", just think of the alternatives:

I think this is a really interesting forum and i would like to contribute it with my latest Xp patch adventure.

Two days a go, i went up to windows update site and selected several updates from driver and recommended updates sections. After installation "you need to restart" dialog appeared and so i did what it said and restarted my laptop. System restarted and hang up just at the "wellcome to windows" window. I waited a bit but nothing happened and then i tried "ctrl alt del" combination but apparently the keyboard was dead too. I disconnected the power cable and nothing happened and then i tried to shut the system down by pressing the shutt down button and even that didnt worked. The only thing i could do is to wait and i waited a bit and suddenly i realised that all the fans are stopped but cpu did not. I was getting a burning plastic smell out of my laptop. When i turned my laptop upside down i saw that my laptop is melting. For some reason cpu is working pretty hard without any cooling fan. I panicked becaouse i was in a college library and i didnt have any screw driver to unscrew all the secrews and take out the battery. I rushed out and found the security guys and thank god they had a screw driver. I took the battery out and opened the cpu compartment and started blowing some air on top of cpu. I was hopeless because the heat was intense for about 30 minutes. Later i went home and put in everything back and restarted the system and thank god it worked with just some small file system problem that i fixed later. the thing is if i couldnt find the security guys my $2300 laptop will be history now just because iupdated my winxp.

Oh, my Lord, I just can't help it...

To shutdown your system you just need to hold down the power button a llittle longer than normal. A few seconds and it should go down.

Actually, later on in this thread someone posted that exact same thing, and even later on, the original poster of the thread I quote above, said he "held the power button down for several minutes, several times to no avail", unbelievable, ain't it?

older Toshiba laptops had that problem, they had a hole in the side of the case where you can reset the power

Oh, by the way I just got a MS Security bulletin that had a swen.a worm attached
