Do you guys know a nice *public* usenet news server?? I'd like to use my newly discovered KNode in order to ask my linux questions on some appropriate groups...
Thanks

Teranews is good.
EDIT: They do have a one time small fee for the "free" service.

yeah but that's not really free is it? They take a one time 3.95 fee. Do you know some other servers (perhaps not as good as this one, but that works and that has linux groups)??

The trouble now-a-days is that anything offered free gets tons of abuse. If someone tells me that something is free and the sends me a bill for $400.00 for a 5 year contract, then it is not free. If they request a "very reasonable" amount for "free" services, I cannot complain.
I had already encountered the same thing when signing up for a Freeshell shell account. Although it really is "free", they make you send a dollar within 30 days to keep your account active. I was so impressed that I sent 10 or 20.
The thing is that they get people signing up with bogus accounts to harrass others. I can see that the small fee can help keep this in check.
I think there are other really free services, but their newsfeeds may not be as good.
Good Luck.

Ok I said to myself "what the hell it's just 4 bucks" and create a teranews account. It seems to work ok but the servers are kinda slow aren't they??
Also which news reader do you use?? I had KNode and Pan installed on my system. After test driving both I Pan turned out more professional (if only it wasn't this slow. maybe it's because it is my first day). Do you have any other suggestions.??

There are several free newsgroup servers, but IMO they don't let you post. Makes complete sense to me, as 2damncommon said. More often than not, however, I find better (more thorough, faster, and more comprehensive) answers searching here at LQ than on the linux/slackware/whatnot newsgroups

What is slow? Text posts in the Linux groups should be pretty quick.
I have generally not had a problem with speed on Teranews.
Pan is what I use most of the time.
Tin is nice on the console.
