Newely compiled 2.4.22 kernel HELP!!

Well this is a first for me. well teh way this newly compiled kernel is reacting anyway. I have recompiled a few kernels bsd and linux before. but ive never gotten anything like this

My system is a 500mhz K6-2. slackware 9.0, D-Link DFE530TX+ nic card, sb 128 sound card

ANyway i compile this kernel, get it setup and editied my lilo.conf . but when i boot up and goto lilo. i select my newly compiled kernel wiht great hopes, but evertyime its selected to run, it reboots my machine. Ive been rereading my linux book and a doc or 2 on compling kernels. im following the steps exactly, but it just keeps rebooting my machine, this is the thrid time ive recompiled and i still get this.. anyone have any ideas?? im in dire need of assitance

thanks

Nick

Usually when a kernel reboots the computer it's because you selected the wrong processor, or maybe you forgot to specify the processor.

Well it solved the problem. it no longer reboots, i selected my acutal cpu in the and i also selected support for the reiserfs filesystem and what not. but now when i boot my new kernel it gives me a kernel panic, unable to mount root fs @ 3:01 or something like that

any ideas?
