Thumbs up newbie learning to update Portage (w/Gentoo) Help!

Hey All!

Well, I am a newbie to Linux Gentoo, and I am about midway through the install process. On the command line, I type 'emerge sync' and then it downloads a whole bunch of files to my Gentoo installation. After it is done downloading, it gives me a reminder message saying 'There is an update available for Portage. We _highly_ recommend updating Portage now before updating your packages.'

My question is this: how do I update Portage (from the command line) and then after that how do I update my packages further (also from the comand line).

I'm sure the answer is very simple... sorry for my newbness

hi,

you can open a second terminal and have all the install instructions available to you with a couple of keystrokes.

type "passwd"

this will prompt you to enter a new password

press <Alt><F2>

this will open a new teminal window, log on and bring up the installation instructions

"less /install.txt"

you can use the <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys to scroll through the document and can toggle between the terminal windows with

<Alt><F1> and <Alt><F2>

Ron
