Newbie - copy files


Hi
I'm a newbie :-( how can I copy my whole hard drive onto another withour using compression, and if I copy them back will my linux stilll work fine?? Can I use dd? and if it's possible while it's copying show a picture or text on another tty?

And sorry just one more thing, in dos you can put in "pause" in a batch file for a user to pres a key to go on, is this possible on linux?

This is the programming forum, try general help next time.

cp -avx / /mnt/hdX#

Should work, replace X with the letter of your drive, # with the partition number.

The command 'read' without any arguments should work for your other question.
