New install Suse 9.1 won't boot after security updates
This is the first time I have installed Linux. After the install I successfully rebooted a few times, then I ran the online updates thru Yast, and it will not boot. I have tried in safe mode and that doesn't work either. When I press F-2, it will either scroll many lines extremely fast, or it will stop after loading the sound. I am using an onboard via sound. I am dual booting with WinXP.
The same problem happened on one of my previous install attempts, so I reinstalled, but got the same results. Thanks for any advice :) |

well, we do need more info.
explain more clearly what you mean when you say "doesnt boot" whats on screen when the fault occurs ? can you ctrl+alt+F2 or ctrl+alt+F6 (for slackware ) into a seccond login console ? if you can get a command prompt.. can you find any errors reported when you type "dmesg | less" ? |
When I start it, it looks like everything is loading successfully (there are green "done") it goes thru the network stuff, then the last 3 lines are:
starting ptal starting sound driver:via82xx restoring the previous sound setting then it hangs. When I start in "failsafe" the last 7 lines are: unount: invalid option -n reiserFS: hda6: found reiserfs format "3.6" with the standard journal reiserFS: hda6: using ordered data mode reiserFS: using flush barriers reiserFS: hda6: journal params ... reiserFS: hda6:checked transaction log (hda6) reiserFS: hda6: replayed 7 transactions in 2 seconds Then it hangs. in either mode ctrl+alt+F2 or ctrl+alt+F6 do not do anything at all. A few more things to think about...
Have you tried the rescue process? Insert CD1 (or DVD1) and boot from it, choose repair the current linux operating system.
Also, is this Suse 9.1 personal or professional we're talking about? I personally think your file system may be corrupt, and the repair operation should fix that. Let us know, how it goes... |

I removed "ide=nodma" from the kernel command line in grub.conf. Now it's booting fine. |
That is normal suse usually dont work at all ! like detecting hardware or setting up right!
