networking help with WhiteBox 3

yeah i finnaly got my system to install with dual boot WinXP Pro, and Whitebox 3.

my logitech trackball (USB) is working, my partitions didnt get FUBARed...

yeah..

now to figure out why my network card(s) are not working properly...

i have both the onboard (intel based 10/100/1000) NIC, and a PCI 3com 3c905 NIC.

WhiteBox detected and installed the 3com, but did not see the onboard. that is ok, tis why i put the 3com in the system in the first place.

now when the 3com is set to DHCP, it does not pull an IP from my SMC router. i know the router works with linux and this card specificaly as it will feed IPs to both my laptop, and that card when running winXP... my laptop runs RH9.

ok no biggy, so i use the gnome GUI tools to adjust the 3com to a static IP. well when i:

service network restart

it takes a rather long time to bring up eth0 (the 3com i am guessing) and then i try to run yum, or ping, and neither of them do anything but sit there and hang.

what steps do i need to take to resolve this issue. please tell me what i need to post so you can help me.

thanks.

1 step closer finnaly.

Run the command: dmesg | grep eth to get a better idea of what nic is being assinged as eth0 and eth1. Could be you just have them reversed.

Could be some kind of issue with Whitebox. Easiest way to check is boot up with Koppix and see how it handles your nics.

Yeh, I think version 3.4 has the new kernel. But if you are having that kind of hardware problem with Knoppix, I doubt you will have any better luck with Whitebox.
Far as I know Whitebox is based on RH7.3 which means you will probably have to dig up drivers for anything newer than that.

hmm, well knoppix worked for the NIC, but not my USB trackball. go figure. FYI SuSe9.1 personal worked for both the NIC and the trackball, but the GUI was screwed up as it did not detect properly my vid card. ATI 9500.

just bad luck after bad luck on this box for linux. real shame.

Of course one could try to solve problems
rather than trying to find the ideal distro with
a flawless install ;) ...

I think the best for you would be to go with Suse 9.1 because it only has one driver issue. That can be solved by checking out this site....
http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/in...showtopic=1195

If you still want to go with Whitebox, just find the right drivers for the devices.

Sorry, no idea where to find your MB and or nic drivers other than googling around. I've never actually had any nic driver issues so I'm not sure where is the best place to look.
