Network hard disk, not NAS(?)

Hi, what was this function/software called that i could share like a IDE on my lan, so other computers could attach to it, and use it like any other local internal disks?
I have been looking around a bit, but i cannot seem to figure out what that software / function is called.

The function is called a "file server".

There are a number of popular file server protocols. The two you probably want to look into are nfs and/or smb/cifs.

For Windows style smb/cifs file sharing, use samba. But be aware, configuration can be a bit of effort, depending on how cooperative the Windows computers are.

For *nix style file sharing, use nfs.

Hi.
Its not samba/cifs, i consider those still to be "nas", because you mount a samba share as a folder/directory.
While with this server/client you get a "real physical disk" in the client side, that behaves exactly like any other internal hard drives, repartition and encrypt the "drive".
This is what i am looking for.
