Network auto start override

I am trying to configure my system to not start up networking services at boot, and it works, but then I have to go into controls and activate it to surf the web.

Is there a way to have it automatically start up when I actually attempt to connect to the web, such as opening Netscape or similar? IF so, is there also a way to have it automatically disconnect after a certain period of time?

When you say networking services - you talking about a dialup connection yeah? What distro are you using?

You can gets tools that will make you ppp link dial on demand. I used diald for a while with pretty good results.

I run MDK 8.0

By networking services, I mean connecting to a network through my NIC. I dont use a modem.

There are scripts that will dialup on demand, you may be able to use the same method to start networking.

One way is the shortcut for netscape could start networking also.

How would I set up a shortcut to activate networking when I click on Netscape?

Everyone correct me !!!: -

Could you not make a file called whatever that has the executable attribute on, and just put the command to start networking (/path/to/network start ???), followed by the command to start netscape in it?

But why?? The idea of network connections is that they're always on... I'm curious

Best way to stop any illegal remote accesses - take the cable out of the wall! :)

Anyway, I'm off for the weekend

Bye
