Netscape 6 JAVA Plug-in
Hi.
I am trying to install java support for Netscape 6 (under MDK 8.1).
I've downloaded J2RE and installed it,
and created a sym link on netscape/plugins to point to the libjava so file.
Nevertheless - when I enter a java web page, i get "Loading Java Applet" on some gray window - and nothing happens.
Any suggestions?

the file you are linking to is for netscape 4
the other file mentioned is netscape 6 and mozilla 9x
if you installed java you should have a ns4 and a ns600 folder

Checked, never the less...
I've checked several times.
I created a sym link in /usr/local/netscape/plugins/
to
/usr/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
And it still doesn't work..
Any more suggestions?

The link needs to be in /usr/lib/netscape/plugins
or maybe /usr/local/lib/netscape/plugins for netscape 6
Do you also have netscape 4.xx
check to make sure where everything is. normally netscape 4.xx is in those locations, not netscape 6
It is possible that you have both

I really hope you are joking, but if so it isn't funny.
You should never ever run anything as root that you can run as a normal user.
If there is an application level exploit in your program then running it as a normal user limits the damage it can do, running as root allows the exploit to cripple your entire system.

Still doesn't work..
Hi.
I've uninstalled Netscape 4 (only left the plugins RPM for Konqueror) - yet, nothing changed.
Strange thing is that after doing HELP/ABOUT PLUGINS I can see the Java plugin, and all seems to be in order.
Nevertheless, when I log-in a java enabeld site - I still get a simple gray window, with the writing "Loading Java Applet" - and nothing changes.
I've run out of ideas..

there is a new install of netscape 6.2 available. It has the option to install java, you might want to try that.
