Question Netgear FA511 not working with SuSE 8.2

Environment:

SuSE 8.2
IBM Thinkpad A20p, 512mb
Netgear FA511 PCMCIA Ethernet Card
Linksys Router
Toshiba Cable Modem
Home network with Win98, and XP boxes

I installed SuSE and everything went well but I couldn't access my network. I used YaST to remove the detected card and re-added it and then could surf the Web and retrieve email.

After rebooting nothing worked again! And now, simply deleting the card and re-adding it (through YaST) does not work. Yes, I am a newbie... :-)

I can attach logs or output, just let me know which might be helpful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Russ

Actually, doing the following works:

ifconfig eth0 'ipaddress'
route add default gw 'ipaddressofgateway'

So maybe the problem is with DHCP???

Is there any trick to getting DHCP to work?

Hello,
I've just moved your thread to Linux - General. Member Intro is a good place to say 'hello', but questions have bigger audience in other forums.

wilson2703, does your connection use DHCP? If you use ifconfig+route add default it may mean there's no DHCP or the address is always the same. Please tell us, so you have DHCP?

Thanks for helping.

I'm using a Linksys router with a Toshiba cable modem. I have a WinXP and a Win98 system using DHCP and everything works.

Does this help?

Are the WIndows machines directly connected to the cable modem?
