does acer or whoever give you a copy of their linux distro when you buy their netbook?

let's say I tried out debian's acer distro but wanted to revert back to the original, is that possible?

or maybe I could grab an image of my hard drive, is that possible too?

The supplier should either give you a CD or make one available for download - otherwise you'd see headlines about the FSF and others writing letters to the supplier. But of course, check their websites to make sure.

You can definitely make a direct copy of the software and the MBR + partition table and restore later if you wanted to.

yeah yeah, I know that netbooks are supposed to be ultra portable but a few grams of weight and a few more buck for more storage is what I'd go for. And I could always dualboot ...0

Well, that assumption would be wrong; the usual practice these days is to give you no XP cd, but you can ring up MS and buy one (~$30). Of course that's for laptops with the full version of XP - I have no idea what the deal is with the cut-down version used on these eeePC types.

unforutnately when you buy laptop with M$ os installed, you wont get the cd/dvd of it.
