Need some help on updates

Hi, I installed RedHat 9 about 6 months ago and I'm now starting to realize how many packages that came with it are now obsolete. Things like xmms and other standalone applications are easy enough to update, but how about things like gnome, and nautilus? What about updating X? I don't really understand how to do things like that. Hopefully, it wouldn't require a recomplie or anything. Also, when I look at the gnome system monitor, I see lots of programs, some of which I probably do not need. If this were windows, I'd know exactly which ones I could safely disable (I spend a lot of time analyzing HijackThis logs for windows users and I still have a windows box here). But, I don't have the slighteset idea on what I need and what I don't when it comes to linux. I know theres a command that will list all of the running processes so if someone can tell me what it is, can i post the list here and someone tell me what I need? Things are a little slow so I hope this will help speed things up. Thanks in advance.

There are several tools to keep your system updated the default redhat one is up2date. The biggest problem you have is that redhat 9 is out of date and not really supported any more.

You can list your proceses with:
ps -ef

I could never get up2date to work. Is there a way to reinstall it or is there something else I could use?

There doesn't seem to be too much running that you don't need but you could probably stop portmap unless you use nfs. Do you share files to windows machines? if not you could stop samba. What do you use for printing if anything - you may be able to stop cups.

What happened when you tried to use up2date? Would it not start?

Yes, I share to a windows machine and I have a two printers conected to that windows machine. I'm not sure if cups would be needed for that?

Well, I just tried up2date again and I got a little farther this time. I ran rhn_register to try and register with the redhat network. Once I finally got my proxy configured, I was able to do that. It got up to the step of sending a profile to the RHN and then after it said it was reading rpm headers, it presented a screen with channels to subscribe to. After I clicked next, it said it was sending something and a progress bar came up. The progress bar is still up, although the application seems to have frozen. I can bring up the progress dialog and the main window, but both are blank. However, there is internet activity on the computer with the internet connection and it is coming from my linux box. I am not sure if this means it is doing something that I have to just wait for.

Well, I finally got up2date to work. I have a question though. Should I have it update kernel too? By default, it doesn't. Currently I have kernel version 2.4.20-8. But, what does up2date do when it update a kernel?
