I would like new windows to be aligned top left rather than centered in my monitor when I open a new application. Is there a way to do this in Linux?

window positioning on open is down to the wm you are using, usually you can set a user prefs for it but without knowing what wm you are using cant gi e details
houndhen, what you want is most likely possible.
in order to help you, you must tell us more about the linux distribution you use, which desktop environment, and if you know it, which windowmanager.
I think that I have found what I have been looking for. KDE System Settings, window management, window rules, new and then size and position tab, go down to initial placement.
