need network hd what to use-samba, nfs...?
I want to have part of the harddrive on a LAN server shared with Linux and WindowsXP client machines. I don't need print sharing or really anything else--just the ability to transfter files to and from the server from any client easily. I know about and use scp, sftp, and ftp; i want something else though, something thats always available without logins. Is samba the best choice? How would NFS work? The server is Unix.

Samba is a great choice. I use it to share files between Windows, Mac, and Linux. NFS isn't bad either, but it takes some extra tinkering to get working in Windows, which I'm sure you don't want to do.

if the win machine is ntfs, then definately go with samba. If it is fat32 then either nfs or samba will work.
Samba is best tho |
