Need information on GPS

I have a laptop with only usb (2.0), but I do have a usb->serial adapter if necessary, I am wondering:

what is a good gps unit that is known to work in linux, if you use one which one? I prefer inexpensive, but linux compatibility is the most important thing.

At a LUG I visited a few years ago (2?) I saw someone use linux with a gps unit and wireless card to map out all the wireless signals in Reno NV, I need to do similar, I am mapping the wireless access for a local resort. Anyone have experience with this, if so what software/websites/info can you give or point me to?

Any information will be most helpful, I have tried google and sourceforge.net but am finding limited information in most places.

I prefer Garmin GPS receivers. I only have experience with recievers using serial ports that output NMEA-0183.
