My modem is a US Robotics, 56K, Sportster, external, model 0459 and I'm using
Mepis, KDE version3.3.2 Release 2.6.10

I have been unable to get online using the KPPP dial-up connection.

The settings I have been using are the defaults:-

Modem device = /dev/modem
Flow control = Hardware [CRTSCTS]
Line termination = CR/LF
Connection speed = 460800

When I 'Query' the modem, I get 'Modem ready', then 'Modem query results'.

When I try to logon it gets to 'Initializing' and freezes up.

(I can use this exact same procedure with an external 'Winmodem' but it will only
logon at 9600 baud, which is why I bought the Robotics modem.)

I would appreciate it if someone could help me here.

Which distribution do you use? (In SuSE it's much easier than directly communication with kppp(d), you'd use Kinternet).

You might also try wvdial (from the console), which produces a more or less verbose log...

P.S.: You connection-speed seems awfully high?

"Mepis, KDE version3.3.2 Release 2.6.10" is what I wrote but I guess this is _not_ what you mean by the distribution, right?

The 'HELP' file said to use the highest connection speed (460800) which is the default.

I appreciate the suggestion about Suse (I have one of those) and will check it out.

Why, yes, it is. Where did you write that before? I certainly didn't see it...

More exactly I wanted to know whether you use KDE. In that case you have "Kinternet". If it is loaded already it is a little symbol like an electrical plug in the lower right corner of the screen. Click on it and it will automatically connect to the provider you set up for your box (SuSE does that by YAST, with Mepis I don't know). Else click on the menu bar and insert Kinternet into the menu bar...

If Kinternet doesn't work, a right-click on it's symbol will bring up a menu where you can select "show log" for more information about the error.

Well, but that is impossible for an 56k modem (56k = 56.000 after all ). Why don't you try a lower speed first ... also find out what speed your provider supports for modems (mine supports only 49k for my 56k modem ).

Well I use SuSE, so it's easier for me to explain what to do there .

I tried using a Suse ‘live’ CD :-

KDE 3.1.4
Release 2.4.21 - 99 - default

First, I got:-
ERROR KPPP
You don’t have sufficient permission to run /usr/sbin/pppd

Please make sure that KPPP is owned by root and has the SUID bit set

Then I got:-
ERROR KPPP
/etc/resolv.conf is missing or can’t be read

Ask your system administrator to create this file (can be empty) with
appropriate read and write permission.

After closing both of those I got the KPPP connection box.

After I set up my ISP information, I ‘queried’ the modem and it appeared
as everything was OK but when I tried to login it went to ‘initializing’
and froze up.

Ask me if I am frustrated yet. :-)

Sorry to answer only now, I was for two days not in the "old firm". Oh yes, the LAN will be shut down in about one hour, so I'll be back on monday earliest...

... which might be the reason for your problems. Do you have enough space on your hard disk to install (temporarily)?

Not exactly the newest, but should work with a modem .

Well you have to resolve that before closing any boxes . It might be resolved if and when you install on hard disk. Or read http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdenet...ppp/index.html

Anyhow, an other way would be to just call up YAST (the tool like symbol) and configure your modem and connection from there, that should hopefully do the trick as well.
