need help with putty on winXP please

i think i have SSHd setup properly on my RH9 system, i did change the default port and verified that it is up vie netstat -ai | grep (port# here) and it is listneing now to the proper IP for any IP incoming over that port.

i have restarted SSHd to verify that it is up and running.

when i try to get access to SSH via PuTTy on my winXP pro box it just times out.

do i need to set the user/pw inside putty, or will i be prompted for that information once SSH is established connection?

yes i did verify that i put the correct port # in putty as i changed it from default.

thanks for the help, guidance, and assistance.

tell me what information i need to post and i shall.

yes i read over the FAQ and documents on the putty homepage, but i just dont get the SSH thing yet.

firewall enabled (iptables)? you shouldnt have to do more than put in the IP or DNS name and the port from the Putty perspective. Something on the box you are SSH'ing to is dropping the request.

nope firewall is disabled, not sure if iptables are running, but i can check. doubt they are.

ok, im blonde. forgot that when you disable iptables. that you also have to change cron to not boot it.

just rebooted the system the other day to clear up a hung audio device.

ok, im in now. yeah.... ty now i can work on getting X11 forwarding to work for me too.
