need help booting from floppy and installing from cdrom

I've acquired some Compaq Deskpro 2000 machines, c. 1997 models, small HD, 64 mb RAM, 200 Mhz Pentium, the usual deal, that I'd like to load Linux on. The distro is Slackware 10.1, though I don't think that's really pertinent to the problem I'm having (which is why I'm not posting in the Slackware forum).

The big issue with these boxes is that the ancient BIOS will not allow you to change boot device order, so I can't specify booting from cdrom and installing in a normal manner. I'm going to have to boot from a floppy and specify that I want to install the bare.i kernel on the CD to the HD. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to accomplish that? I thank you in advance for any help!

BTW, I did check the archives and couldn't dig up anything directly pertaining to this.

TigerOC,

Thanks for the reply! I now have a bootdisk and install disks created with rawrite12 (rawrite wouldn't work)- as far as I can tell they're OK. The problem I have now is actually installing. I insert the bootdisk and enter:

boot: mount root=/dev/fd0

then hit <enter>.

The system boots and prompts for the first install disk. I put it in the FD, hit <enter> and get:

FAT: bogus logical sector size 2461
UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted
FAT: bogus logical sector size 2461
FAT: bogus logical sector size 2461
sh-2021: reiserfs_read_super: can not find reiserfs on fd(2,0)
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 02:00

It seems as though I'm either not creating the install disks correctly or there are other parameters I need to enter at the boot: prompt- any suggestions?

I am not sure what is happening and can only comment on the error;

sh-2021: reiserfs_read_super: can not find reiserfs on fd(2,0)

The above indicates that it is looking for a reiserfs on the 2nd floppy drive. Since it is unlikely that you have 2 floppy drives it will not find it. These instructions would be part of the boot scripts.
I can only suggest Googling for a floppy howto.
