Need distribution recommendation

I recently received a laptop - Dell Inspiron 6400 E1515 ; Dual Core - Intel CPU 1.60 GHZ / 1.60 GHZ; 1024 MB of RAM; ~ 70 GB hard disk space. It came with windows vista preinstalled, which I'll keep for whatever reason. I'd like a Linux distribution to run on it though. Something possibly even to use Command Line - only. This is my first laptop so I have 0 experience. Any recommends?

Gentoo is the LAST thing I would recommend to a new user. But this user already has Gentoo.....don't know what to say....

Seriously, anything in the top ten on the Distrowatch "hit list" should be fine--except maybe for wireless. The last time I was in this particular sandbox, I was pleasantly surprised to se Ubuntu work for everything--including wireless--on my office laptop.

Having just switched over to Mepis65 at home, I will now try that also on the laptop.
