Need command to change server IP address

Hi, I'm a Linux noob who inherited a Slackware webserver system.

The university where I work installed new hardware and assigned a new IP to my network connection. I need to know the command to change the IP on my linux server.

Thanks!

ifconfig command will do this.

You'll also want to edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to make these changes for when you boot up.

Or you can do the simple way and run netconfig to change your network settings, etc.

That's my problem. I don't know the exact commands for editing /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to change my IP. I'm a linux beginner.

I used netconfig to edit my network settings, but when I typed /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 it showed my IP as the old one.

You have to use vi or pico or any other command line editor to edit text files. But when you run netconfig, this should actually edit the rc.inet1 file.

Regards.
