Necessity of OSS+ALSA, and Program conflictions

Why is it necessary to have apps use both OSS and ALSA?
I need a sound configuration that works for everything. I don't know if there is a confliction problem or what, but when I first start xmms and then a game, I get no sound. When I start the game and then xmms, xmms says something like "the sound divice is in use". Is there an easy fix for these problems? Thanks for any advice.

Createa a file in your home directory called .asoundrc, with the following contents:

pcm.dmixer {
type dmix
ipc_key 1024
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0"
period_time 0
period_size 1024
buffer_size 8192
rate 44100

bindings {
0 0
1 1

pcm.dsp0 {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmixer"

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmixer"

pcm.default {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmixer"

ctl.mixer0 {
type hw
card 0
This tells Alsa to share - i.e. it means that more than one app. at a time can use Alsa.

Then, tell every app. that uses sound, to use Alsa. Problem should be solved.
