I live in Shelbyville, TN. I have a question about running a device in Linux that is paramount in my mind right now, and I don't know of anyone close to my area that can help me out. The issue is that I'm wanting to operate my Tascam US428 inside my Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 OS. This site (http://hal9000.drehmoment.org/tascam/) says it can be done, but I'm too much of a novice to know what to do to follow what is said. If anyone can give me detailed directions about what to do, and even better to let me know about any Linux specialist in my region, I'll be grateful.
Thanks, Danny

so this is the device.
not exactly sure what it does beyond being a soundcard; midi functionality?
i think you'll need jackaudio and a dedicated distro (not your everyday driver) for this.
have you searched? i just did, first result looks interesting.
generally speaking, i doubt there'll be step-by-step instructions for you specifically.
maybe it is a good idea to ask someone locally. where's your nearest LUG?
There are some Linux User Groups (LUGs) in Tennessee. They might be too far away for you to attend meetings, but many LUGs have mailing lists or forums. There's one in Nashville. https://www.meetup.com/Nashville-Lin...NmEa1_g9nqt-GK
In fact, my own LUG has a forum and you would certainly be welcome there. Registration is required to deter spammers.
Yes, there's the LUG in Nashville, and I assume there's probably one in Huntsville. Both cities are approximately 60 miles either north or south from me here in middle Tennessee. I really want to find someone local though, whom I can be in more frequent contact with than I can in just attending a monthly LUG Meetup.
Oh, and yes, this USB unit does real time audio and MIDI. It's a fascinating piece of equipment, in that it is essentially a small USB studio mixer, and has taken the place of a sound card for me in my Windows OS. I need help, though, in knowing what to do in order to attempt to get it working in Mint.

isn't it possible that some people come to these meetings from further out, just like you do?
that would be the best place to meet them.
or put an ad in the local (online) rag?
or put a paper ad on the next supermarkets info board?
you do realise LQ is a global forum, and the chances you meet a linux user so close to your home are really, really small?
Maybe you can contact a local college or University to see if any engineering students are working with Gnu/Linux. I am sure that you will find a student group.
You've got a College of Advanced Technology in town with an IT department: some-one there might be interested in your device and be able to help. You could always contact the head of department and ask.
Thanks, guys; I found a contact at MTSU in Murfreesboro. I sent her a message, asking for any nearby help she might know of. I'll have to see what happens from this...
LQ members don't reply by email because every internet users should be able to see the answer to the question asked in the LQ thread.
So I recommend you edit your first post and remove your email address because you don't really want that spammers get it with scrapers
