MySQL problem

Ok, i try to start mysql by typing mysql and then it gives me this error.
"ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)"
What can i do about this to get mysql running.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but you are running the server, aren't you?

The "mysql" program you run as a user is just a simple client. The real program is "mysqld". It is a server that should be run at system startup. I don't know how Slackware organises this.

Paul.

ok i am running apache so mysql is another server. I did "whereis mysqld" it told me it was in /usr/libexec/mysqld. I tried starting that and it gave me "
david@MrSlack:~$ /usr/libexec/mysqld
/usr/libexec/mysqld: Can't change dir to '/var/lib/mysql/' (Errcode: 13)
030330 17:32:49 Aborting

030330 17:32:49 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown Complete

"
So what should i do now? I have also tried running it as root and it gave me the same thing.

Did you setup the default database (mysql) with the default permission tables? It's easy - just run the mysql_install_db script and it will create the database and tables for you. You should also set the user and group permissions for the mysql directories - steps for this are documented in the INSATLL file (if you built from source) or in the /usr/share/doc/mysql<version>/ directory.
